Chinese site MyDrivers and insider Jon Prosser believe that the next generation iPhone SE will move to a design similar to the XR models, so developers will have to ditch the Home button and add a "notch" to the top of the display. Such changes seem likely as Apple SE products have always used the design of older devices.
The iPhone SE is likely to launch after the iPhone 15 line is released in 2023. The two standard iPhone 15 models are expected to feature the A16 Bionic chip from this year's iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, so it's likely that the iPhone SE could also get that chip, especially since the current iPhone SE uses the A15.
The device is expected to be released no earlier than 2024. Analyst Ross Young recently said that Apple is considering several decisions related to the next generation iPhone SE.
For the fourth-generation iPhone SE, Apple is considering displays ranging in size from 5.7 to 6.1 inches from two different vendors, Yang said. It's worth noting that the iPhone XR, the device on which the next generation iPhone SE is supposedly based, had a 6.1-inch display. What's more, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously stated that Apple is working on an iPhone SE with the exact same size display.
There have been rumors in the past that the displays will come in 5.7-inch and 6.1-inch sizes.
In his latest report on the subject, Yang said that the 5.7-inch to 6.1-inch displays being considered by Apple feature LCD technology, like the current iPhone SE, but the company is also considering OLED technology. Display similar to that offered for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.
The iPhone X was released in 2017 as the first iPhone with an OLED display, and since the launch of the iPhone in 2020, all major iPhone models from Apple have been equipped with the technology. OLED display technology is more expensive than LCD, but offers higher efficiency, true blacks, high contrast and wide dynamic range. It's entirely possible that OLED panels have dropped in price enough that Apple could use them for the iPhone SE, which is positioned as an entry-level device, especially since it is not expected to be released until a year later.
When moving to a full-screen design like the iPhone XR, there will apparently be no room on the bottom of the iPhone SE for the touch ID Home button, so Apple seems to have no choice but to put it on the side and use Touch ID technology or Face ID.
According to MyDrivers and Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is indeed planning to add a Touch ID side button. The latest iPads, iPad Airs, and iPad minis have Touch ID built into their top buttons, but the iPhone doesn't offer this feature yet. As Apple's cheapest iPhone, to keep costs down, the iPhone SE never had Face ID and instead used Touch ID on the Home button like older iPhones. Thus, it makes sense for the iPhone SE to be the first model to receive an updated implementation of Touch ID in the form of a side button.
According to Yang, the iPhone SE is expected to feature a notch at the top of the display, so developers can ditch Touch ID in favor of Face ID. Face ID will be 7 years old in 2024, which means that enough time has passed to justify introducing the technology to an entry-level device. Since even the flagship iPhone models don't offer Touch ID under the display, this seems less of a possibility for a cheaper model. We are waiting for more information about the new device in the near future.
