The Lord of the Rings prequel may show us canonical characters from the original trilogy

Andy Serkis, who will direct and star in the upcoming movie The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, said that in the film fans will be able to see some of the characters from Peter Jackson's original trilogy.
