Rey to star in new Star Wars trilogy

The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Rey, the protagonist of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, will appear in several upcoming films in the franchise.
Rey to star in new Star Wars trilogy

This information is based on information from insiders who claim that Rey’s involvement in the new trilogy, which is being developed by writer and producer Simon Kinberg, has sparked debate. The question is whether the franchise will continue the Skywalker Saga or whether Lucasfilm will decide to create new stories with completely different characters. Rey remains a key figure for the company, since most of the other significant characters have either died or finished their stories. According to rumors, several directors are already looking to include this recognizable image in their projects.

The actress who plays Rey, Daisy Ridley, will definitely appear in the film, which is being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. However, there is no information yet about her other possible roles in future Star Wars films. At the time of writing, several films in the universe are in development:

  • The Mandalorian and Grogu is a continuation of the popular series The Mandalorian, the release of which is scheduled for May 22, 2026. The project is being directed by Jon Favreau, known for his work on Iron Man. Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver will also star in the film.
  • Rogue Squadron is an anthology film about fighter pilots directed by Patty Jenkins.
  • Lando is a spin-off about Lando Calrissian, starring Donald Glover.
  • An untitled film about the new Jedi Order, which will take place 15 years after the events of Episode IX. Daisy Ridley will once again play Rey. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct.
  • An untitled film about the Dawn of the Jedi, the events of which unfold 25,000 years before the main episodes. James Mangold will direct.
  • A project about the New Republic, which will take place between the original trilogy and the sequels, related to the events of the series of that period. Directed by Dave Filoni.
  • Also in development are untitled films from Taika Waititi, Shawn Levy, and Rian Johnson, as well as a trilogy from Simon Kinberg.

Sources for The Hollywood Reporter note that having so many projects in parallel is a challenge for Lucasfilm, since unlike Marvel or Harry Potter, Star Wars doesn't have a vast source material to draw from. One of the key issues is the discussion of the future of the Skywalker Saga.
