According to recent leaks, Half-Life 3 may actually be in development and closer to release than ever before. The source of these rumors is Gabe Follower, a YouTube channel that specializes in studying Valve games. According to him, the project, codenamed Half-Life X (or HLX), is nothing less than a true sequel to the legendary series, and its development began immediately after the completion of Half-Life: Alyx. Valve has been secretly working on this project for about five years now.
The ending of Half-Life 2: Episode Two, released in 2007, left players on a cliffhanger, keeping the anticipation for the third part alive for many years. Despite constant hints and rumors, there has been no official announcement from Valve. However, Gabe Follower has collected numerous pieces of evidence that indicate that HLX may be the long-awaited Half-Life 3 that fans have been dreaming about.
In a new 15-minute video, Follower revealed that Valve is actively recruiting a team of specialists to work on HLX. The team includes developers who have worked on games like Doom, Fortnite, and Red Dead Redemption, with some of them hinting at their involvement in Valve projects on their social media. Moreover, since 2021, changes have been noticed in the Source 2 engine code: the designation HLVR has been replaced with HLX, which has increased speculation about the existence of a new project.
Valve is also actively developing Source 2, adding features such as dynamic weather, vehicles, and improved NPC mechanics. These updates may indicate that they are preparing for new technical challenges that may have previously hampered the creation of Half-Life 3. As Gabe Follower notes, Valve often hides the names of its future games behind codenames, and the changes to the engine may indicate that the company has finally overcome the difficulties that have hindered the development of a sequel.
Despite the lack of official announcements, the active developments around HLX and Source 2 hint at a possible large-scale project approaching. Fans remain in suspense, trying to figure out whether HLX will be a full-fledged Half-Life sequel or another mystery from Valve, but the evidence is mounting, giving hope for a revival of the legendary series.
There is little information, so the shooter could be based on the StarCraft, Warcraft universe, or a completely new IP.
