Supposedly, such games need serious innovation.
Age of Empires series creator laments strategy genre not changing at all

Dave Pottinger, who is behind the Age of Empires series, lamented that the real-time strategy genre has not changed at all over the years.

According to the developer, people are now playing the same RTS that they played 20 years ago. An example of this is the Stormgate strategy and other representatives of the genre that are currently being released. And if the studios want to revive this direction, they will have to put in a lot of effort and bring something truly new and interesting to the genre.

Note that since the release of Stormgate on Steam, the game's online presence has fallen from 5,000 people to 90 users.
