Nowadays, isometric slashers are not uncommon, but really good projects are really hard to find. The essence of the gameplay in such games comes down to one thing - to destroy as many enemies as possible in (often) repeating locations. At the same time, such projects rarely boast a variety of game mechanics. Oddly enough, in Darksiders: Genesis you also need to crush enemies right and left, but in addition to this, he has collected quite a few interesting elements, which we will try to tell you in detail.
Darksiders is a cult series of games about the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, where in each new part the developers showed the story of one of the four Nephilim. But there are four riders, and three games? Indeed, the story of the middle rider brother named Discord remained behind the scenes until this moment. Genesis is a spin-off, prequel to the trilogy that tells about the events leading up to the original Darksiders.
This time you have to control two Horsemen of the Apocalypse at once. One of them is the younger brother, War, who once lost his arm, and the other is the middle brother, Strife, who has a subtle sense of humor. Throughout the game, they go hand in hand, which means that at any time you can choose the desired hero. At first, this element may not seem like the best gameplay solution, but after the first chapter you involuntarily realize its advantages.
Like a true fighter, War prefers to use a huge sword, with which he deftly destroys all evil spirits in his path. Well, thanks to the skills that can be found during further passage, you can make a real car-killer of demons and other evil spirits out of the War.
Discord is the exact opposite of a desperate horseman with a sword. The middle brother prefers to use firearms - two lethal revolvers with infinite ammo. The small damage of the cannons is compensated by fast firing. In addition, in the future you will find various expendable ammunition with increased firepower or some special effect. For example, one of the skills opens up the ability to attack with electricity several enemies at once, while slowing them down a bit.
As for the enemies, it's mostlyweak, but numerous demons. Sometimes there will be so many of them that you even have to retreat. But basically such enemies are ordinary cannon fodder. It turns out that War is better for attacking groups of enemies, while Discord is great for fighting single, but strong enemies (with transitional or final opponents).
Although, with the final demons in each chapter, most likely, you will have to deal with the help of two Horsemen at the same time - they are very strong.
Each of the brothers will be useful not only in battles, but also in certain moments of the game. This becomes especially true after you first discover useful devices for each character, with which you will have to solve simple puzzles and open previously inaccessible passages.
Each rider can have three devices at the same time, but you will not get access to all of them until the end of the game. Such items can be used both to solve puzzles in the main passage, and to complete side tasks. That is why you will have to return to some locations several times: in almost every chapter you can open additional passages that will lead to the next secret or allow you to pick up a rare item (strengthening one of the heroes or??Luch). But since the necessary devices will be available later, you will have to memorize the location of the puzzles in a particular chapter and return here later. In addition to standard puzzles, in almost every chapter you can find gates that open with special keys. By opening such gates, you will not only find various improvements, but also start solving one of the main puzzles.
The charred council sends War and Strife straight to Hell. As it turned out, this is not another cruel joke: Lucifer managed to persuade several small and higher demons to help him upset the balance. It would seem that Samael is one of Lucifer's most obvious allies. However, upon arrival in Hell, the Horsemen observe an interesting picture: Samael's castle is under siege, the walls are about to collapse, and Moloch is to blame for everything. Without wasting time, the Nephilim quickly get to the castle, where Samael blames Lucifer for everything and by all means refuses collusion with him.
After a short dialogue, Samael sends the Horsemen to the very depths of hell - to the Abyss. Here they meet the demon Vulgrim, already familiar to many. As usual, you will be able to buy goods and upgrades from him. However, Vulgrim will play an important role in the beginning of the plot, since the Horsemen will have to carry out his instructions for most of the game. In the future, inNot and Discord will have to visit the remote corners of the underworld and fight with many servants of Lufitser in order to finally find out the truth about his sinister plans.
One of the main features of the game are the entertaining dialogues of the Riders.
War tries to control himself and always listens to the voice of reason, while Discord is sometimes annoying, but more often it starts to amuse. Time after time, Discord tries to make fun of his younger brother in every possible way, which makes War even more angry. We can say with confidence that such dialogues will make you smile more than once.
Visually, the game looks good, but on the other hand, not good enough. Of course, we should give credit to the level designers, since it is unlikely that you will find at least two locations that could be remotely called the same type. All levels are made according to their own analogue and have original secrets and riddles. Despite the frankly weak graphics, the project has a good soundtrack and background music that changes with each new chapter. The tracks are really chosen very correctly and reflect everything that happens on the screen at one time or another.
The game turned out to be very captivating??body and complex in its own way. In most cases, the plot puzzles will be simple, but because of this, it would be wrong to call the project insipid. We recommend Genesis to all fans of the series and gamers who are not yet familiar with the franchise. This is a great opportunity to discover a new story and further familiarize yourself with the entire Darksiders trilogy.
