The fast travel system in the game is unlocked much later, after you complete the prologue and get to Sacramenta, having previously destroyed the first storyline boss, the Outlaw Warrick. Once that happens and you're in Sacramenta, you'll learn for the primary Whisper of Cerim.
This is the primary Whisper that has appeared on Sacramentum. From now on you can use fast travel, but it works about the same as in many games with hub and "bonfires". You can move from any Whisper in the open world back to the primary, in Sacramento. And from the primary, you'll go back to the last one activated.
Figuratively, if you're traveling in the open world, went somewhere far away and found a Whisper, you can return to Sacramentum by activating it. After selling goods, buying new equipment, completing side quests, you can return to the previous Whisper of Sacramenta from the primary Whisper. But note that if you activate any other Whisper after returning to Sacramenta, you won't be able to move to the far whisper.
Whispers are the analog of the bonfires from Dark Souls. Once activated, you will regenerate health points. On the other hand, all defeated enemies will remain as such, meaning no one is revived. But until you start traveling between regions. Enemies will spawn again each time you travel. Resources are revived after an hour. Re-activating Whisper will not restore health. But the Whisper you interacted with last will be where you go if you die. Upon death, the character loses nothing except 10% of the durability reserve of all equipment used.
