Drone Academy, a free quadcopter simulator created by the team of the National Cyber-Physical Platform Berloga, has been released on Steam. The game is aimed at beginners and was developed specifically for schools, clubs and teachers who want to teach drone control in a safe virtual environment, without spending money on real equipment.
The project has already been tested by participants of the Reach for the Sky festival, which covered 18 regions of Russia. After that, the simulator was introduced into the curriculum in Bashkiria and Novosibirsk, where drones became not just entertainment, but a tool for preparing for real professions in the field of cyber-physical systems.
“Today they train in the simulator, and tomorrow they will go on expeditions and search and rescue missions,” the teachers note. The ease of learning and depth of capabilities have made the game popular - more than 65,000 downloads and a rating of 7.1 on VK Play speak for themselves.
The player takes on the role of a trainee copter pilot who has arrived on the exoplanet Kinerma. There, he will have to solve practical problems: from aerial photography to cargo delivery and programming autonomous routes. A fascinating plot and fantastic setting turn training into a game, especially interesting for younger students.
"Drone Academy" offers realistic physics, personalized control (ACRO / ANGLE / STABLE modes, rate settings), work with a suspended camera and even a damage system: a broken propeller changes the behavior of the drone, forcing the player to learn how to stabilize the flight in difficult conditions.
Important: this is not a racing sim, but an educational and as close to reality tool as possible for those who are just starting out in the world of UAVs. The developers were inspired by recognized projects like Velocidrone and DRL, but focused on the initial stage — that very first “exciting” flight experience, when everything is still new, but already fascinating.
Players’ reviews confirm the success:
The simulator supports a wide range of devices — from a keyboard and mouse to professional controllers on OpenTX and EdgeTX (Radiomaster, Jumper, Frsky, etc.). The controls are flexibly configured, there are instructions for connection and calibration.
Drone Academy’s low system requirements allow it to run even on weak PCs, making it accessible to schools throughout Russia and the CIS. There are no plans for a mobile version, but in the future the project will receive new maps, missions, and advanced drone settings. The plans include tasks on searching, geodesy, agricultural inspection, fire extinguishing and 3D scanning.
The developers promise controller giveaways and ongoing community support. And most importantly, the game remains free and continues to develop along with its players.
