Then go towards the gate so that the herbalist and guards appear. Wait for the guard to your left (to the right of the herbalist) to move to the left. The problem with saving the herbalist is that you won't earn anything . There is no cutscene, no changes to the narrative, dialogue, rewards, interactions, collectibles, or achievements.
The herbalist will stand still, doing nothing, and you still have to go to the next area, as you would if he dies. Thus, you will spend resources to save the herbalist, but nothingyou won't get it for this, so it's best to leave them for another situation.
