Cliff: Mark petting the dog/Charlie runs away

If Charlie died earlier, you will control Mark as he heads to the factory. There he will see a dog. Here you can aim and throw an object at the dog. Your actions

Let time run out so Mark doesn't throw a rock at Connie. He will be able to pet him, which indicates that the dog trusts Mark. This may come in handy later .
Throwing a rock will scare Connie away.

Note : If Charlie is still alive, you will control him in this chapter. Connie will bark at him, but Charlie won't throw the rock anyway. Most likely, the game implies the fact that earlier (off-screen) Mark met the beast, stroked it and became friends with it.

Homestead: Kate and Jamie are alive

The key decision to save the dog in The Devil in Me is made during the Homestead chapter. In my playthrough, I controlled Jamie, although Kate was also alive (both survived the Glass Trap).

In any case, enter the house. Jamie will see Connie the dog. Then you are presented with an important choice that affects the fate of the beast. You need to tell Kate what to do:

Help me - Kate will try to help Jamie, but she will also run to the back room with her.
Hide - Jamie will tell Kate to hide behind one?? from sofas. This is the correct answer.

Shortly after, Du'Met will appear. He will hear Connie growl and understand where the noise is coming from. Once Du'Met spots Jamie, the camera will pan to the broken bottle Jamie is holding. You will be able to aim and throw an item.

Here are all possible outcomes:

Hit Connie - Jamie will kill Connie and the dog will stop barking. Du'Met will leave, allowing Jamie to survive. Such an outcome...
You chose the "Help me" option and let the timer expire - Kate will hide with you in the back room. If you don't attack Connie, he will bark and bring Du'Meth here. The last one will kill Jamie. Death cannot be avoided .
You chose the "Hide" option and let the timer expire - Kate will stay in the living room. Connie will bark and Du'Met will approach her. Before he can do anything, Keith will push the enemy, Connie will bite him. All leave unharmed.

Lake: the dog gets into the boat

In any case, Connie the dog is already saved and will not die. The next time you see him is during the final chapter "The Lake". As the group leaves on the boat, Connie will board and join them, as she trusts Mark. When Du'Met attacks, she will be thrown overboard, but the creature will be able to swim to safety. You will get the "Best Ending" achievement.

Note . Surprisingly, you will receive this achievement at any timewell, regardless of which characters make it to the end of the game. The main thing is that the dog survives.

What if Jamie is already dead?

Last but not least, if Jamie died during the "Director's Room" chapter (i.e. either at the hands of Du'Met or crushed by a glass trap), in the "Homestead" chapter, you will control one Kate.

When it's time to aim and hit, don't kill Connie. Just let the timer expire so Connie will bark and run away. Oddly enough, Du'Met will just hit a can of tomato paste.

Then make sure Kate saved Mark in the Lighthouse chapter by opening the door. This ensures that you still get the final on the lake. If they are both captured, you will get the worst ending and you won't see Connie escape.
