How to recruit prisoners in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord

The first place you can take captives is to sell them to the nearest villages or cities. However, they can be used differently, turning them into regular troops of their own army. Below we describe how to do this.


Whenever you win a fight, you have a small chance of getting prisoners in addition to loot. Any units can become prisoners, from ordinary peasants to elite soldiers or cavalry. Thus, by capturing such people, you can make a significant profit or even strengthen your army without the need to improve existing low-level soldiers.

Once you have the prisoners, go to the squad menu. Here you will see all units included in the group. At the beginning of the game you are limited. For example, you will have a very meager limit on the maximum number of warriors. However, later you will learn about ways to increase the size of the squad. And captives are the best way to fill the empty cells that have appeared.

Click on the prisoner you would like to hire. You will recognize the name of his division. Sometimes b?A small icon with an “arrow” will appear. This icon indicates that you cannot recruit a prisoner and make him a soldier in your army.


Take it as a necessity to break the prisoner. At first, the soldier will not want to betray his former master. However, over time, more and more prisoners will be ready to defect to your side. Therefore, if you want to hire a prisoner, you should not sell him. Just keep it with you and wait for it to break and agree to join the ranks of your army.
