While dozens of games continue to explore space using familiar patterns, the studio Atypical Games, previously noted for its flight simulators Sky Gamblers , has unexpectedly changed course. Together with Gaijin Entertainment, it presented Cubic Odyssey is an ambitious sandbox that combines the spirit of exploration from No Man's Sky with the constructive freedom of Minecraft. This project invites players to a cooperative journey through a world where cubic geometry is not just a style, but the basis of the universe.

At first glance, Cubic Odyssey evokes associations with such projects as Astroneer or No Man's Sky, but the game quickly shows its own face. Here, the universe is built according to the clear logic of cubes - from planets to meteorites. Giant floating blocks instead of the usual spherical worlds create an unusual visual atmosphere, emphasizing the originality of the setting.

The story revolves around a team of space pioneers (up to four people in a co-op) who set out to find a cure for an unknown threat - an infectious "red darkness" that devours worlds and ecosystems. However, the mission quickly gets out of control: the ship crashes, and now it's your job to survive, explore, and find a way to salvation from scratch.

From the very start, the game greets players with a solid tutorial and a customizable task system. One of the group members can follow the main plot, while the others focus entirely on survival and resource gathering.

Before diving into an expedition, you need to create a character that resembles the inhabitants of ROBLOX in style, only with a cubic anatomy. Next, choose a specialization: you can become a miner, a craftsman, a pilot, or a knight. Each role provides unique bonuses that gradually increase with leveling.

  • Miners quickly extract resources.
  • Craftsmen create improved items and save on repairs.
  • Pilots control advanced ships with enhanced defenses.
  • Knights deal with infected areas and enemies spawned by darkness faster.

In addition to the main specialization, players also upgrade secondary skills - the more often you use an action, the stronger it becomes. Crafting, combat, trade, research - the development system is flexible and at the same time free from the exhausting grind that often spoils the impression of such games.

In Cubic Odyssey character leveling is closely connected with the expansion of technological potential. The creation of new workbenches and tools opens access to more powerful equipment. After only half an hour of playing, our team reached the production of mid-level items, which was a pleasant surprise against the background of many space sandboxes, where such progress stretches out for hours.

The variety of production stations is amazing: from the builder's workbench with a rich selection of blocks and decor to specialized modules for modding equipment, repairing, crafting weapons and even programming. Some devices require rare materials, so expeditions in search of resources become an important part of the gameplay.

Initial weapons are limited: everyone has a laser cutter and a simple pistol for protection. But dangers lurk everywhere - from night creatures and drones to space pirates. In addition, meteor showers occur, forcing you to seek shelter in underground mines.

Important: digging into nowhere, as in Minecraft, is ineffective here. The main resources are hidden in deep crevices and caves. Rare materials require advanced tools, but if you want, you can gouge them out with a standard cutter, spending much more time on it. A fun and useful feature is combining the beams of several players to speed up mining.

The survival system is enriched with a new parameter - suit energy. It is spent when using weapons and equipment, and its depletion reduces combat performance. Energy needs to be controlled no less than health and armor. Equipment upgrades - from jetpacks to robot companions - also play an important role. Robots can be customized, training them to search for specific resources or even accompany you in battle.

The scanner allows you to find interesting places: trading posts, mysterious ruins, portals and shipwrecks. With its help, our team found several abandoned hoverbikes , which after repair became indispensable transport.

Once the planet has been explored far and wide, and the equipment has been upgraded to the maximum, the game takes a step forward - now you can design and build your own starship. This opens the way to outer space, to new worlds and large-scale battles.

Visually Cubic Odyssey is a mix of No Man's Sky's acidic palette with a cube aesthetic. The bright colors of the biomes are sometimes jarring, but the changing time of day and weather conditions create truly vibrant and beautiful scenes. Sunsets reflected in the water and starry skies over snowy plains are especially beautiful. The effect is enhanced by an advanced lighting system that adds depth to the environment.

Unfortunately, the release version could not avoid technical problems. High ping , crashes when creating sessions, lack of built-in chat and bugs with NPCs can seriously spoil the impression. Animations sometimes break, and some objects do not load at all , blocking the passage.

Verdict from ShowGamer.com

Cubic Odyssey Review – Minecraft Conquers Space

Despite its rawness, Cubic Odyssey has a huge potential. It is a truly exciting sandbox with a well-thought-out survival system, convenient crafting, rich leveling and fascinating exploration. The game is especially revealed in co-op, where teamwork makes every moment brighter. If the developers put the technical part in order, the project has every chance to become a new star of the genre.

Benefits:

Some changes from the usual crafting game formula really do away with the boring aspects of the genre

Great art direction and breathtaking views

Instant ship teleportation makes it easy to return to base

Drawbacks:

Batteries are needed and they take up space in the inventory

A huge variety of blueprints and it is easy to get confused

Minor technical nuances (they will probably be fixed soon)
