Brendan Green, known online as PlayerUnknown, has announced that he is leaving the PUBG team (the developer and publisher of Krafton) to found a new independent studio, PlayerUnknown Productions (much like Kojima Productions). Green, who created PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds as a mod for Arma, is considered a pioneer of the "battle royale" genre. After that, he, together with the Korean company Krafton, turned PUBG into a full-fledged, standalone game.
In 2019, Green moved to Amsterdam to set up PlayerUnknown Productions under PUBG Corporation (owned by Krafton) and move on to developing new games. But now PlayerUnknown Productions is officially splitting from Krafton and becoming an independent studio. On the other hand, Krafton retains a minority stake in the studio. Green's first project is called Prologue. It was announced almost 2 years ago at the Game Awards 2019.
I am very grateful to all those who are involved in PUBG and Krafton for giving me a chance, for all the opportunities that I have received over the past four years. Today, I'm excited to take the next step on my journey to create the experience I've been dreaming of for years. Again, I am grateful to everyone at KRAFTON for supporting my ideas, and when I have more information, I will be sure to share new details of the project.
Green's press release added that PlayerUnknown Productions is "exploring the systems needed to enable massive scale in open-world games."
