In a new interview with GameInformer, Senior Narrative Systems Designer Alice Rendell and Lead Systems Designer Matteu Delisle from the Star Wars Outlaws team talked about the types of encounters that await players as they progress through the game. They also discussed the reputation system, which will have a significant impact on in-game encounters.
According to Delisle, the main character's relationships with different factions, especially in the underworld of the Star Wars universe, will provide different opportunities and threats. He explained that the reputation system arose from the studio's desire to tell a rogue's tale.
The heroine, being a free rogue, uses different factions throughout the game not out of friendship or loyalty, but as they use her. According to Rendell, each game mechanic is built around a reputation system. Players will be able to take advantage of this system, including the ability to risk their reputation to earn more money by betraying certain characters or factions. For example, a heroine may be tasked with obtaining an item from a faction and choose to steal it or, if her reputation is good enough, just take it.
Each faction will control their own territories, and players will have to consider their reputation so they don't linger too long in hostile territories.
Star Wars Outlaws will be released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series on August 30.
