In an interview with Windows Central, Patel noted that some RPGs successfully implement multiplayer mechanics without sacrificing the quality of the single-player experience. Avowed had previously considered a multiplayer component in development, but the idea was ultimately abandoned. Obsidian decided to focus on creating an exciting single-player RPG, which is their forte.
Patel explained that developing a rich multiplayer experience in addition to creating a new original RPG from Obsidian would be too much of a creative and technical challenge for the studio. She drew parallels with Baldur's Gate 3, noting that Obsidian chose to focus solely on single-player experiences.
As such, Avowed will be strictly a single-player RPG, without any multiplayer elements, so that Obsidian can fully realize their vision and create an exciting single-player adventure.
“It's important for us to make sure that we have a really solid campaign and critical story path that puts the player in a meaningful role as a character moving things forward, making important decisions and really shaping the world and characters around them, which obviously becomes more difficult if you’re trying to add a multiplayer component,” she said.
“Not that any of these problems were insurmountable, the team at Larian Studios created an incredible RPG with Baldur's Gate 3, and they had years of experience with Divinity: Original Sin, working to create a multiplayer game within a truly robust RPG structure. This is a very difficult thing to do well, and we wanted to make sure that first and foremost we delivered what players expect from an Obsidian Entertainment RPG, which is a really well-crafted story, meaningful choices and consequences, and the opportunity to be an agent of change in the world.”
