Officially: "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" is included in the list of cultural heritage of the United States

The Library of Congress has added 25 motion pictures to the National American Film Registry. This list includes The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Star Wars. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983), WALL-E (2008) and other films.

Based on the National Film Preservation Act, the library must be replenished with 25 films each year. The Librarian of Congress selects paintings that have "cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance." Films must be made at least 10 years before being entered into the register.
