FIFA series: evolution turning into degradation. Part 1 (1993-2005)

22 years ago, back in 1993, the football simulator FIFA International Soccer appeared. No one, probably, could have imagined that a little later it would be one of the most popular sports games in the world. This has influenced the fact that the largest company Electronic Arts has been releasing a new installment of the series every year for several years. How this affects the quality of the entire franchise as a whole, we will talk below. In the first part of the article, the evolution of FIFA up to 2005 will be considered. Sit down comfortably - it will be interesting!

History of FIFA from 1993 to 2005

In the early nineties, EA Sports was making a name for itself with basketball and rugby sports games. We are talking about NBA Live and Madden NFL. Wanting to move forward and develop other sports in 1993, Neil Zewarapperuma, then head of marketing at EA Sports, created the first part of FIFA. It happened on July 15, 1993. I must say that the developers did not fail! The American company was not embarrassed by the fact that football in the United States was not as highly developed as in Europe or the same South America. It practically did not exist in the country. But still, Neil decided to assemble a team that laid the foundation for one of the biggest series in the world.

To date, 22 parts have been released. This is without taking into account the various branches dedicated to the European Championship, the World Cup, etc. FIFA has been and remains the best-selling football game in the world.

FIFA is published in approximately 20 different languages and is available in more than five dozen countries. Over 100 million copies of game discs of the series have been sold worldwide for a long time. 23 years ago, EA Sports could only dream of such success. Firstly, when Madden and NBA Live appeared, there was no talk of any competition in the market. Secondly, if we talk about the first part, then after its release, the developers faced pretty tough competition. The eighties saw the releases of Sensible Soccer, Kick Off and Match Day. And when these projects faded into the background, then Pro Evolution Soccer from Konami began to be seen on the horizon. Nevertheless, FIFA was, is and, at least in the coming years, will be the best football simulator in the world.

Let's try to find the reason for the success of the series by going back and studying its history.

1993 FIFA International Soccer

While Kick Off and Sensible Soccer were on the market, 1993's FIFA International Soccer (also known as FIFA 94) was the first isometric soccer game. Similar games developed up to that time used the standard top-down or bird's-eye view (as in Sensible Soccer).

Another reason for the success in those years can be called the fact that this is the only project that has received an official license. FIFA International Soccer was released in honor of the 1994 World Cup in the United States. Only the national teams of the countries participating in the World Cup were in the game.

One of the most used bugs in FIFA International Soccer allowed gamers to score a goal during a kick-in by an opposing goalkeeper on a goal kick. It was enough to stand in front of him in one step and wait for the projectile after the goalkeeper's hit to bounce straight into the goal. The game was released on PC, SNES and Game Boy. It went to number one on the UK charts. She stayed in the first position for six months.

1994 FIFA 95

FIFA 95, the second part of the series, featured football clubs from different countries for the first time in history. We are talking about the Bundesliga (Germany), the Italian Serie A, the Spanish Primera División, the English Barclays Premier League, the French Ligue 1, the Dutch Eredivisie, as well as the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and the US Championship.

Unfortunately, all club teams included athletes with fictitious names, exactly the same as in the debut game of the series a year earlier.

Exclusive to the Mega Drive platform and built on the same engine as FIFA International Soccer, FIFA 95 was visually a bit better than its predecessor. But still the most significant change was the presence of football clubs instead of national teams.

The US League (now called MLS) included real teams, while the Brazilian competition boasted only clubs from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

1995 FIFA 96

FIFA 96 marked a significant leap in visual quality for the series, replacing the raw graphics of its predecessors with modern 3D on PC and PlayStation consoles. The fictitious names of the athletes were replaced with real ones.

In addition to the eight championships from FIFA 95, the Scottish Scottish Premier League, the Swedish Allsvenskan League and the Malaysian Liga Super Malaysia were introduced.

For the first time in the series, to increase the realism of the gaming experience, gamers were allowed to rearrange, choose tactics and navigate by the rating of athletes.

1996 FIFA 97

FIFA 97 features commentary from Jon Motson and Andy Gray for the first time in the series. Des Lunam provided a voice-over that talked about the teams before the start of the match.

Another of the innovations in FIFA 97 was the mini-football mode (6 x 6). Matches were held indoors, the ball bounced off the walls, and therefore there were no corners or outs. This mode was a non-stop action that was interrupted only if someone scored a goal. Of course, the presence of this mode has not canceled the usual outdoor game for everyone according to all the standard rules.

And now the most interesting. Back in those days, the phrase “Motion Captured”, which is fashionable even today, appeared. Almost all the best football leagues in the world are collected here. But all of them were represented only by the main national championships.

1997 . Road To World Cup 98

This is the first part, which has become an offshoot, a spin-off of the franchise, dedicated to the World Cup. Road To World Cup 98 boasted all 173 registered national teams, a tournament mode, 16 stadiums, a huge graphics engine upgrade, more advanced opposing team AI, and last but not least, 189 clubs from major European leagues.

Surprisingly, for several years since the release of Road To World Cup 98, gamers have not seen the same FIFA, covering so many football clubs and teams.

One of the most "winding" features was the absolute mess with offsides. For the first time in the series, it was possible to adjust the level of severity of the referees. By setting this parameter to a low value, gamers could make tackles from behind, score goals from an offside position (by the way, as far as I remember, offsides were canceled as a separate item). You could run up to the goalkeeper holding the ball, make a tackle and score a goal (or am I confusing something?!). Thus, gamers had the opportunity to switch to football "without rules".

1998 FIFA 99

Apparently due to the low popularity of the futsal mode released last year in the FIFA series, it has never been seen again. The Liga Super Malaysia was also removed, which was replaced by the championships of Belgium (Jupiler Pro League) and Portugal (Campeonato Português de Futebol).

It is worth noting the improvement in graphics, because for the first time the athletes have some kind of individual facial expressions. They also differed in height for the first time. Despite the fact that even then there were no club emblems, football kits looked much more realistic and close to their real counterparts.

An editing function has been added. So, gamers were asked to create their own cups, tournaments and leagues, and then choose a list of clubs participating in them.

1999 FIFA 2000

In FIFA 2000, MLS first appeared, replacing the rather simple name "American League". In addition, there were clubs representing the SAS Ligaen (Denmark), Tippeligaen (Norway), Israel and Spor Toto Süper Lig (Turkey) championships. A total of 40 championships of various countries. Gamers could choose a mode with full seasons.

Together with the release of FIFA 2000, the developers began to pay more attention to the physical confrontations of athletes on the field, new animations of faces appeared, and a hard tackle of the ball. But for its "cartoonish" graphics, it was criticized and was called one of the weakest iterations from EA Sports.

Although the game was released for Windows, PlayStation and Game Boy, there was a beta version for Nintendo with 40 classic teams, which consisted of players who have long or recently hung up their boots. Note that this feature is not available on other platforms.

year 2000. FIFA 2001

FIFA 2001 was the first football game released on the next generation of consoles - the PlayStation 2. The release was marked by a dramatic shift in the graphic component, as well as the appearance of small details. On the jerseys of the athletes it was possible to see the emblems of the clubs, the title names of the sponsors.

The Portuguese and Turkish championships have been removed from the series, but the Österreichische Fußball-Bundesliga of Austria has appeared for the first time. Gamers could push with their elbows, make tackles. Players could also dive into the penalty area, begging for a penalty. However, due to UEFA innovations related to Fair Play, this feature was soon removed and never appeared again.

It is also worth noting that in FIFA 2001, for the first time in the series, a scale with impact force appeared. As you can see in the screenshot above, there are already slight similarities between players and real athletes.

year 2001. FIFA 2002

In FIFA 2002, a scale with the strength of the pass, as well as arrows indicating the running character, appeared. Cut-scenes have been added with goal celebrations as well as receiving red cards. For the first time in the series, the Swiss RAIFFEISEN SUOER League Championship has been added.

The most notable of the features of FIFA 2002 is the automatic entry into the final stage of the World Cup of three countries, in accordance with the regulations of the organization of the same name. We are talking about South Korea and Japan, who hosted the World Cup, as well as France, which won the last competition. The player increased the rating of the selected team by participating in regular friendly matches.

2002 FIFA Football 2003

In addition to a slight modification to the name of the simulator, the tenth installment of the FIFA Football 2003 series significantly overhauled the graphics for the DirectX 7 capabilities used in FIFA 2001 and FIFA 2002. This resulted in more detailed stadiums, athletes and football kits. One of the most surprising features was the introduction of the Club Championship Mode, in which gamers were given the opportunity to compete in one league against 17 of the best clubs in Europe playing in their own stadiums. The crowd of fans supporting the team sang specific songs.

For the first time, statistics appeared after one half and at the end of the whole match. This feature is still in use today. Star players began to stand out from the rest due to the new "freestyle" system.

The EA Trax feature allowed gamers to block music tracks they didn't want to listen to.

2003 FIFA Football 2004

FIFA Football 2004 for the first time in the history of the series could boast of the presence of the second divisions of the championships of European countries. Their addition allowed gamers to start the game at a weaker stage and raise the team to the TOP level in career mode.

But the most important innovation is Off the ball. This feature allowed one gamer to control two athletes at the same time: the one who controls the ball, as well as the character without it. For example, during the execution of a free kick, it was possible to switch to another player, open up to them in a more dangerous zone and pass to him by the player who takes the free kick.

FIFA 2004 for the first time pleased with the presence of teams from Latin America, who joined the Brazilian football teams. We are talking about Club America, Toluca, Monterrey and Club Universidad Nacional (Pumas UNAM).

2004 FIFA Football 2005

FIFA Football 2005 is the first game to boast such a long career mode - 15 seasons in a row. In addition, a Mexican league appeared.

Surely even then EA began to worry about the rapid increase in the popularity of Pro Evolution Soccer. That is why FIFA Football 2005 was released much earlier (October 4th) than usual (at the end of it). Despite the fact that there were few innovations, in general, critics and fans noted positive steps forward compared to previous parts.

The cover of FIFA Football 2005 featured Patrick Vieira, Fernando Morientes and Andriy Shevchenko (still in AC Milan uniforms).

2005 year. FIFA 06

The release of FIFA 06 was marked by a complete overhaul of the engine. Almost half of the code from the previous iteration was completely rewritten. The system was removed from the series Off the ball, which allowed gamers to control two teammates. Instead of this function, such a thing as Team Chemistry appeared. The teamwork of the team increased depending on the number of matches played by the same squad. If it changed, then the indicator, of course, fell.

The manager mode has undergone major changes. This time, gamers had to independently conduct dialogues with sponsors, manage the budget for transfers, pay salaries to athletes, trying to keep the mood of their players at a high level. For the first time in the series, if a player was not happy at the club, he could refuse to renew his contract. This fact also influenced the team's previous chemistry score.

Jon Motson and Ellie McCoist were replaced by other commentators Clive Tildsley and Andy Gray. FIFA 06 introduced a video section with "classic moments" that could be unlocked by completing various tasks.

Small Conclusions

In total, we looked at 13 parts released between 1993 and 2005. It can be said that the series kept pace with the generation of consoles and the capabilities of the PC. The graphics were constantly upgraded and the gameplay improved. The developers of EA Sports were looking for something new every year that was not there before. The game has evolved, developed, which, in principle, is easy to see from the attached screenshots.

In the second part of our article, you can find out about franchise fees from 2006 to 2015 inclusive. You will learn how it turned out that the huge gap between FIFA and PES turned into a narrow ditch last year, which you can jump over if you have a good run.
