Paramount Pictures recently confirmed a release date for the remake of the classic film The Running Man. The new adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name will hit theaters on November 21, 2025. Edgar Wright, known for his work on Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, will direct the film. He is also co-writing the script with Michael Bacall. While an official start date has yet to be announced, The Wrap reports that production will begin in November 2024.
The remake will star Glen Powell, known for Twister 2 and Top Gun: Maverick, and martial artist Katie M. O'Brien, who has worked on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Mandalorian.
The plot of the new version of the film will be closer to the original source than it was in the 1987 adaptation with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The main character remains the poor Ben Richards, who is forced to participate in cruel survival games to earn money for the treatment of his sick daughter. The longer he stays alive, the richer he becomes, but in order to survive, he has to break the rules of the game.
It is worth noting that in the original 1987 adaptation, the directors not only changed Richards' motivation, but also moved the action of the story to another time, which caused discontent among Stephen King. The writer did not like the interpretation of his novel. However, the film still received recognition from viewers and critics. On the Rotten Tomatoes portal, the film has a rating of 67% among critics and 61% among the audience.
The remake promises to return to the darker, more realistic tone of the original book, which could appeal to both fans of King's work and those who enjoy fast-paced, tense stories about survival in a world where wealth comes at the cost of human life.
