Looks like Sony is done in Russia? Not quite, we explain

The Russian division of Sony Mobile Communications, Sony Mobile Communications Rus, has filed for self-liquidation, as reported by the TASS agency. Information about this was found in the database of the Federal Tax Service (FTS) of Russia.

Sony Mobile Communications, a company specializing in portable electronics, is a subsidiary of the global giant Sony. According to media reports, by the end of 2023, only one employee remained in the Russian office - CEO Anatoly Mashkov. This may indicate a long process of winding down the division's activities.

Documents for liquidation were submitted to the tax service on October 10, 2024, but this is not the company's first attempt to end its operations. In December 2023, Sony Mobile already tried to initiate self-liquidation, but was then denied.

It is worth noting that Sony's main legal entity in Russia - Sony Electronics - continues to operate. In the spring of 2022, Sony suspended the PlayStation Store in Russia and stopped supplying game consoles, which became part of the company's broader strategy in response to changes in the economic and political situation in the country.
