Rockstar confirms GTA 6 development is 'in full swing'

Rockstar said yesterday that development of Grand Theft Auto 6 , the next installment in the company's best-selling game series, is "well under way" and is "in active development." That is, the developers have long stepped over the pre-production stage, when everything is just emerging, and right now they are working on the gameplay.

This news came along with information that an improved version of GTA 5 will be released on March 15 for PS5 and Xbox Series X / S consoles.

On their blog, Rockstar says:

Given the unparalleled longevity of GTA5, we know many of you are wondering how things are going with the new installment of the GTA series.

With every new project we start working on, our goal is the same: to improve what we've done before as much as possible, and we're happy to confirm that active development of the next Grand Theft Auto is well underway. We look forward to providing more information, so please stay tuned to Rockstar Newswire for the first official details.

GTA5 first appeared in September 2013 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Almost 10 years later, we first heard official confirmation of its continuation.

Last summer Bloomberg talked about GTA6 being released in 2024 or 2025 as Rockstar seeks to improve conditions for its employees and avoid the crises that have plagued the company in its past projects.

GTA6 is expected to take place in present-day Vice City, a fictional city based in Miami. Various reports have suggested that the map will expand and change over time, with updates comparable to what's happening in Fortnite.

It has been speculated that the expanding map is part of Rockstar's efforts to reduce the effects of the crisis. This will allow the game to expand post-release, and the company won't have to squeeze the last bit of juice out of itself to squeeze all the content into the original's release.
