Last week, a Quake remaster was released with improved graphics and an original soundtrack. One of the added bonuses was the E2M6 Grim Oubliette map, which was returned to its original dimensions. This detail was noted in his Twitter by the designer of the original John Romero.
Romero clarified that the remastered version of E2M6 is the one he originally designed, but then he decided to "improve the start" and added an extended input. Unfortunately, due to these improvements, the map size exceeded the allowed 1.44 MB that was set for the team, and he had to return E2M6 to its original form.
Romero later released the extended entry E2M10: Lost Entrance of the Dismal Oubliette, but now, thanks to the remaster, Quake players can enjoy the full map in its expanded, "improved" form. Now, at the beginning of the level, players find themselves in a cave with water, where they fight with enemies in order to end up in the place that was previously the beginning of the map.
The Enhanced Edition of Quake is now available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, and players who own the original version will receive the remaster for free. The game also added other new content in the form of the Dimension of the Machine add-on developed by MachineGames.
The project is codenamed Half-Life X.
