Scheduled for a late August release, Star Wars Outlaws will offer players the chance to immerse themselves in an open world and try on the role of a criminal named Kay Vess. The departure from the traditional Jedi so characteristic of the Star Wars Jedi series seems to be a significant twist for the new project. Outlaws' creative director emphasized that Jedi were also absent from the original plans for the game.
In a recent interview with Game Informer, creative director Julian Geraty noted that Massive Entertainment's decision to create a game around a criminal rather than a Jedi was inspired by the team's favorite Star Wars character, Han Solo. He explained that Han Solo, a criminal and traveler who avoids one syndicate after another in the company of his faithful companion Chewbacca, was always a favorite from the original trilogy. The Jedi are certainly wonderful, but they weren't part of the company's vision at the time.
Once that decision was made, Massive Entertainment was faced with the challenge of creating a character that was compelling, interesting, and powerful enough to keep up with other iconic figures like Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and James Bond. Thus came Kay Vess, whose journey is described as the story of growing up from a street thief to a well-known and respected criminal who inspires fear in the syndicates.
Star Wars Outlaws is scheduled for release on August 27.
