Larian Studios wanted to introduce complex cooperative mechanics in Baldur's Gate 3, similar to those introduced in Divinity Original Sin. Sven Vincke, the studio's founder, told PC Gamer's roundtable.
The deaths in Baldur's Gate 3 are just the beginning. In Divinity Original Sin projects and their sequels, gamers participating in multiplayer sessions can interact with each other's characters through predetermined dialogs. However, implementing a similar system in Baldur's Gate 3 was not realized.
Vinke notes that the team tried to adapt the cooperative approach from Divinity, but realized that in the context of Baldur's Gate 3 it was too complicated. As a result, the system had to be scaled back to the current version. Despite the failure of co-op in Baldur's Gate 3, the developers' enthusiasm has not waned. Vinke mentioned that Larian plans to use this approach in another title; he did not specify whether it will be the studio's next project.
Larian Studios is currently developing two games simultaneously. The events of each of the titles are set in universes created by the studio itself, and it is not yet known when the projects will be released.
