Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Remake Could Have Been a Regular Remaster

The authors planned to “tighten up” only the graphic component.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Remake Could Have Been a Regular Remaster

The co-producers of the Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remake, Noriaki Okamura and Yuji Korekado, recently shared some interesting details about the game's development in an interview with Famitsu. They explained that the project was initially conceived as a simple graphical update for Metal Gear Solid 3, focusing on improving the backgrounds and character models, without making any significant changes to the gameplay. To achieve this, the developers even created a prototype using the original animations. However, it soon became clear that graphical improvements alone would not be enough to bring the game up to modern standards.

Yuji Korekado explained that during the development, they realized that other key elements of the game, such as the controls, perspective, and character animations, needed to be revisited. "Simply improving the graphics would not be able to offer a sufficient gaming experience," he noted. "Every aspect needed to be updated and adapted to make the game feel modern and comfortable for players."

This realization led the team to decide to make a full-fledged remake, reworking almost all of the animations and controls. To achieve realistic movements, such as when using a knife, they once again turned to the original tutorial videos and recreated them using modern technology.

Despite the significant changes, the developers retained many classic elements of the original game, such as the famous Easter eggs, game magazines, and items like the Calorie Mate and Kerotan frogs. Frogs, like in the original, will be scattered around the game locations, but now they will be more secretive, which will add difficulty when finding them in the new third-person perspective.

The remake will also offer new convenient features. One of these will be the ability to change camouflage "on the fly" without stopping the game, which will significantly improve immersion in the process. Korekado noted that the quick function system will allow players not only to change camouflage to match the environment, but also to quickly experiment with the character's appearance.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is coming to PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S, but an exact release date has not yet been announced.
