The game director and lead designer of the first part of the game voiced his criticism on his YouTube channel, noting that, in his opinion, the developers from Santa Monica Studio chose the wrong direction for the evolution of the Kratos character.
Yaffe acknowledged the success of the God of War reboot in 2018 and praised the new look of the main character. However, he opined that the character's subsequent development was unsuccessful. According to the game designer, Kratos had lost his toughness, and he accused the developers of projecting their personal problems onto the game, thereby spoiling the image of the hero.
Yaffe compared Ragnarok to the Indiana Jones films released after the original trilogy. He noted that the main character is aging, and the creators of the franchise are making radical changes to the established image.
On December 12, the free Valhalla expansion for God of War: Ragnarok was released, introducing a new “roguelight” mode with five difficulty levels. This addition became the epilogue to the story campaign.
