There were times when standalone story add-ons often came out for FPS. Think Blue Shift for Half-Life or the mini-campaign for Duke Nukem 3D. There is no official news for these franchises for a long time, and Serious Sam remains one of the last classic first-person shooter series to be supported in 2022. Developers try to use the capabilities of modern equipment, but do not forget about traditions. The release of the Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem standalone add-on is one of them.

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem is a midquel. Have you heard of this trend? It's an inferior sequel. A work (in this case a game) that develops the events of the original (in this case Serious Sam 4). It is noteworthy that a group of talented modders worked on this standalone game, and Croteam only controlled and assisted the process. I say right away - this is another real "Cool Sam", only in a stripped down version: there are only five chapters in the game.

In this mini-adventure, Sam Stone embarks on a journey through the harsh cold expanses of Siberia to catch up and then deal once and for all with the traitor General Brand, who has stolen a dangerous alien artifact. Like the rest of the Earth, Siberia is occupied by the alien army of Mental. But for Sam, this is more good than bad news. And here begins a segment lasting ~ 5 hours, during which massacre, destruction and, of course, secrets await you.

Each mission takes place on a separate map, on which Sam can freely travel, look for secrets, and complete one side task. To progress through the story, there is still one thing left to do: destroy enemies and move from marker to marker. Occasionally there will be puzzles. There are plenty of excuses in the game for throwing massive enemy armies at Sam, then rounding it up with jokes and a fun array of weapons. However, at some moments you can get bored: in the sense that there are 2-3 places where you have to walk almost 30 minutes from point A to B.

Despite the vast expanses of some locations, the action never stops. In principle, this is the whole "Cool Sam". As soon as you think that this is your well-deserved respite, suddenly a bunch of annoying skeletons will run out from around the corner, a “third-class welder” with ray guns will appear in the air, and somewhere in the distance you will hear the frightening clatter of demonic bulls’ hooves. Encounters with Mental armies like this have two outcomes (depending on the chosen difficulty level): Sam gets surrounded and dies, or you act more nimble, choose the right weapons and destroy the demons before they can get close to you.

The jokes in Serious Sam have never been subtle. There is no modern tolerance so promoted by everyone. The game is filled with boring stereotyped characters (not without Russian Ivan and vodka), although unusual concepts slip through from time to time. For example, when Sam controls the mech, whose main weapon is a huge chainsaw. The fur does not have a margin of safety, and the player is allowed to feel like a real superhero. And all this under the hard version of the Russian folk "Kalinka".

What's new in the game besides the setting? There are classic monsters and new opponents. For example, demonic turrets that shoot Sam from afar, as well as acting as a kind of barrier: until Sam destroys their core, it will not be possible to move further. Sam also has access to several new weapons. The fast-firing AK-47 appears, a brand new Perun crossbow that fires explosive bolts at long range. But the best new weapon is the Beam Cannon, which can tear apart any Mind minion in seconds.

Along with this set of weapons, you can and should use several gadgets. For example, targeted missile strikes. Sam will be able to drive a fur, a tank, a snowmobile, a tractor. There is a hover scooter with a built-in machine gun. You will have many toys to play with. Let not for long.

Also in some locations there are riddles and puzzles. There is little difficulty in them, but they, at least for a short time, interrupt all these endless firefights. The emphasis is on giving the player as many weapons as possible.

Verdict

So, for those who want a bit more of Bad Sam or get their first look at the series, Siberian Mayhem is the mini-sequel where the story counts the least. On the other hand, this is still a single-player first-person shooter that will keep you in suspense from the first to the last minute.

Pros :

  • Dynamic battles in the spirit of the series
  • Lots of new weapons and gadgets
  • Puzzles and secrets give a little respite

Cons :

  • Some levels have too much movement over long distances
  • Stereotypical Russian characters and jokes
  • Simple puzzles. Wait, it's FPS!
