Keep in mind that AFK Journey's release is relatively recent, so the game's meta-world is just taking shape, which means it will change over time! Heroes that seem better at the time of the guide's publication may become worse in the future. Either way, we'll try to keep an eye out for updates!

Best Heroes

From the list above, the most versatile heroes are Odi, Thoran, and Reynir, who rank SS in all available game modes.

Thugs

Brutus is great for the early game due to his "Indomitable" immortality skill. This allows him to stay alive for a few seconds longer, which can allow your team to finish off enemies. However, in the higher stages, he dies very quickly. As he progresses into the endgame, he starts to drop a lot, as he did in AFK Arena. He's also not very good for Dream Kingdom, but is quite usable in PvP. You generally only need 1 copy of him in the early game.

Smokey and Mirki are some of the best support units in the early game. They can buff and heal allies. They work great in story mode and are the best support units in the dream realm. However, they don't work in all teams as the range of their tiles is rather small. In PvP, they are of medium level.

Shakir is a versatile hero. He can do a little bit of everything: damage, sustain, and even some off-tanking.

Odi is the best A-level hero in the game. His damage is extremely high and only gets better as he improves. His ultimates poison the enemy and give a large amount of energy when defeated (at level 51). His EX Weapon skill (Mythic+) allows him to take out enemies below a certain HP level. With this combination, he can create a snowball effect and destroy entire teams.

Koko is another strong A-level hero. She acts as a support that can slow down the damage her allies take. This allows her to counter strong burst damage. She can heal her allies and increase their ATK. When her EX weapon is upgraded, she can also remove CC.

Krueger is the best hero in the game at lowering enemies' defenses, making him awesome for the dream realm. He's not as good in other modes, but you should definitely get at least one copy of him for dream realm. Preferably one that you upgrade to Mythic+ in the late game.

Antandra is a decent tank that can play a great role as an off-tank. Unfortunately, some of the best A-level heroes are Maulers, so you'll never put her on your wishlist. If you do have it, however, it can't hurt to use it.

The set is very flimsy in the early game. However, with upgrades, it can do just crazy damage, as well as self-repair. If you invest in him and get to the late game, he can be a beast in any game mode.

Satrana is a melee damage dealer that is too squishy to be viable at this point.

Reese does decent single target damage and AoE, but doesn't really excel at either of those. Still, it's a very solid choice for everything but PvP.

Lumon has all the tools he needs, but he's very squishy and has a hard time staying alive. For this reason, he is one of the worst heroes in the game.

Forest dwellers

Huinn is the best healer in the game. She can heal all allies on the battlefield and can be used on any team. Her only weakness is her slow pace, and she may need support as a backup in the early stages.

Eironn is basically the same hero from AFK Arena. He attracts enemies to him and deals damage to them. This allows him to create awesome combos and makes him part of the meta teams. However, he is pretty bad in the early stages, so he should only be used later on with some investment.

Brion is a ranged player who can summon a falcon pet during combat. Once he unlocks the Tactical Strike skill at level 2, he can also revive once per battle (requires Mythic+).

Grandma Dany is one of the best tanks in the game and is great for story mode and PvP. She is only surpassed in the list of tanks by Toran. She has a pretty strong kit that includes self-repair, CC, and debuffs.

Leeka is a ranged tank that grants her allies attack speed and energy at the start of combat. This can help your team play out their ultimates before the enemy. Her AoE damage is also quite good. She is great for story mode in the early stages, but her damage drops a bit in the endgame. She is good for Dream Realm, but average for PvP.

Damian is a support hero who can give buffs and heal his team. He is pretty weak at the beginning of the game, but at Mythic+ level he can give allies buffs on haste. This makes him very strong for PvP-meta teams.

Arden is a mage who can root enemies in place with the skill "Entangling Roots". He works well with other CC heroes. Like Damian, he is pretty weak at the beginning of the game, but gets much better with improvements. He's great for PvP with the right team, but pretty bad for the dream realm.

Kafra is a warrior for whom the most important thing is marking enemies. He works surprisingly well as a support hero. Mostly due to the Wind Tag skill, which heals allies when the marked enemy is defeated. However, he is very niche and one of the worst wild heroes.

Parisa is a damage-dealing mage who specializes in buffs for allies that rely heavily on her basic attacks. This makes her very niche and generally the worst of the wild heroes at the moment. While she can work pretty well, building a team around her is not worth it.
