As the name suggests, Garry's Mod was originally a modification of the Source Engine that allowed users to use the engine's physics, models, and props. The mod was released in 2004, and then, in 2006, appeared on Steam as a separate product. It's 2021 and Garry's Mod has sold an incredible 20 million copies!
An impressive feat for a game that doesn't have goals, objectives, narrative, or incentive: you just load it up and explore the generated world. However, some gamers have managed to create crazy and amazing maps, mods and modes. According to Harry Newman in a 2019 interview, the game's role-playing capabilities are one of the most appealing aspects for gamers.
While a sequel is already on the horizon, sales of Garry's Mod seem to be picking up. The game reached 10 million copies in 2016 alone. It took her 10 years to do this. In turn, the mark of 20 million copies was overcome 2 times faster - in 5 years. Unfortunately, Newman himself did not receive a dollar for each copy sold. As for a sort of sequel, the game is called s&box, and everything is going according to plan. Instead of the Unreal Engine 4 engine, the game is now using Source 2 from Half Life: Alyx.
The success of the title is quite expected.
New heroes, new challenges.
