Outside in 2019. Rafael Colantinio and Julien Roby leave Arkane, where they have established themselves as reliable and high-quality specialists. But they do this solely of their own free will, setting off on a new, rather risky journey. Having organized the WolfEye studio, they begin work on Weird West , an action role-playing game that Devolver Digital decided to publish without too much thought. They create a game that will take you to the world of the American Wild West, where there are cowboys familiar to the eye and zombies, witches, werewolves, pigmen and other evil spirits that contrast sharply against their background. The player will have to go through five chapters, managing the same number of motley characters.

Weird West is an isometric action game with a dark theme that takes you into a cartoonish world broken into several pieces. Despite the long distances, the title WolfEye manages to create a special atmosphere. A hoarse voice-over accompanies you everywhere - in sleeping areas, in forbidden territories. The well-chosen soundtrack maintains the atmosphere. All the characters you meet come to life thanks to the avatars drawn by the artist Cedric Peraverne. Every building seems to be stylized, and you can literally find some useful loot everywhere. Side quests and random encounters on the map act as pleasant and frequent bonuses. A lot of battles, other gameplay elements, research, and at the same time the story does not keep you waiting. A fascinating western with its own flaws, quirky and attractive characters that develop within the framework of the lore.

Your first hero is Jane. A fearsome marksman and former bounty hunter who is forced to once again grab her trusty revolver after bandits kill her son and kidnap her husband. The perpetrators of this are the Stagnant Water bandits. Then you have to play as Pigman - a man who was turned into a monster by a witch. The fate of the characters depends on your decisions and actions. In terms of decisions and their consequences, the game is somewhat similar to Prey and Dishonored, which use similar systems. If you destroy the people in the settlement, it will remain a ghost town for the rest of the game. And if you save the innocent, then at some point they will definitely (and more than once) come to your aid. An important role is played by both reputation and the decisions you make, which leave their mark in this reasonable, evolving world with its own cycle of day and night. You can literally interact with everyone: shoot flying sticks of dynamite or bottles, hook ropes to window sills, blow up oil lamps.

All Weird West events develop in real time. There are no turn-based battles or anything like that. The mechanics are reminiscent of an intuitively simple twin-stick shooter that delivers a lot of fun. I played the game on PC, I didn't notice any problems or shortcomings, but my comrades who played it on PlayStation 4 report some bugs. However, complaining about problems when playing on the console of the past generation is not comme il faut. Overcoming dangers is difficult, but the death of a character is never disappointing. Hostile areas can be overcome in several ways, you always have to think, rack your brains. Stealth is one of the viable options, but the density with which enemies are located in some areas complicates this approach. Quite weak at first, your hero gradually gains new powers, which comes at the cost of unlocking new abilities and perks. Both can be obtained exclusively for items that you find in the game world or receive as a reward. We are talking about fossilized relics and golden aces of spades. At the same time, there are no experience points or character levels in the game. And there are allies. You can hire mercenaries (tautology should be tautological) or find allied NPCs who will help you just "for the idea". A squad can have a main character and two characters. And, returning to what was said above, in each next chapter, when a new hero comes under your control, you will be able to take the protagonist of the previous section as an ally. That is, all your work will not be wasted. The hero of the previous chapter will keep all the items and things you found! However, the developers, seeking to once again emphasize the gloom of their version of the Wild West, will not allow you to bring dead characters back to life (be it mercenaries or the already saved husband of the main character).

Weapons, firearms or melee, differ in damage, range, rate of fire (in the case of melee, attack speed), and so on. You can switch using ALT. Or you can hold down the same key to see the weapon wheel. You will be able to use one melee weapon, revolver, shotgun, rifle and bow. There are slots for all these varieties, and for each slot there are several weapon options. It has its own rarity and upgrade levels. Rarity, as always, is recognized by color (gray, green, blue cells), and the level of pumping is the number of "stars". And if the rarity cannot be increased, then you can increase the levels of pumping with blacksmiths, passing them nuggets. The abilities you unlock with petrified relics are mostly focused on the use of one weapon or another.

Weird West is a breath of fresh air in the isometric RPG genre. I was very impressed with the mechanics of choice and the consequences of the decisions made, which reminded me of the style of Dishonored and Prey. This is a great adventure that will take you into the world of the Wild West for 20 or even 30 hours.
