Shooters, and in particular FPS, have long been perceived as an outdated genre. If you turn to a fan of the genre, he is unlikely to be able to remember every game in which he customized the M16 or AK-47 rifle. In recent years, we've seen a rise in the popularity of hero shooters, which dilute the usual formula a bit and, among other things, allow you to switch between different playstyles, choosing heroes with their own unique abilities. However, many modern titles are becoming more and more homogeneous and similar to each other. One hero creates turrets, another uses a large hammer, the third uses a shield, the fourth runs fast and throws grenades. And there may also be a hero who can see the positions of opponents. But in this article, we'll talk about Lemnis Gate , developed by Ratloop Games Canada and published by Frontier Developments, which fundamentally transforms the equation by adding turn-based strategy elements to the FPS.
Any duel in Lemnis Gate is divided into several 25-second cycles. You can fight 1v1 or 2v2, and there are several additional modes based on achieving certain goals. For example, Seek & Destroy asks one team to destroy one of two targets and the other team to protect them. Retrieve XM pits teams on the map as they try to collect as many pieces of exotic matter as possible (four in total). Domination is a more familiar mode in which teams fight for control of powerful towers. And each of the three listed modes is divided into two periods, allowing teams to try out both roles.
The duel begins with one of the players playing one of the seven Lemnis Gate characters. Each of them can be used only 1 time per match, and each of them fulfills certain goals. For example, one can shoot poisonous slime, another is a sniper who can slow down time to land a perfect headshot, and a third can place protective spheres at a selected point on the map (or apply the effect directly to an ally).
The thoughtful balance between these completely different characters and their unique abilities is striking. Each of the heroes brings something unique to the match, and each has its own exciting skills that are easy to find synergy between. And the choice of this very synergy of skills is one of the main puzzles of the game, which allows you to form a wide variety of strategies. The characters themselves are well balanced. Players are not tied to choosing one of them, and are not forced to face another - a specific hero. Instead, you can use each hero however you like, adapting to your opponent's strategy and reacting to his actions.
The time loop allows you to do absolutely incredible things. After you are like a player for the first time, in each subsequent loop, his actions will be repeated. Thanks to this, knowing how the opponent was like, you can counter him with your move. Yes, you can kill the enemy, but he will have the next turn, and with another character, he will probably be able to kill yours before you kill him first. It sounds incredibly difficult, but gradually you get used to it and start getting high.
This structure is a unique mechanic that first appeared in Lemnis Gate. Despite the turn-based component, all matches are tense. You can build a battle strategy for a long time, choosing different characters, and in the end leave one hero who has to make one accurate shot, so that this whole ridiculous picture suddenly turns into a victory loop. But at such moments, rest assured, your palms will begin to sweat. On the other hand, the game differs from a multiplayer FPS in that it doesn't really require some incredible shooting accuracy. Much more emphasis is placed on strategic actions.
Lemnis Gate is a budget game with a low cost but a huge amount of content. There is no single player campaign, but there are 12 unique maps. As players level up and complete challenges, players receive in-game currency used to unlock new hero and weapon skins.
Each card is significantly different from the others, requires adaptation and search for its own strategic solutions. Although it is in them that some shortcomings are hidden, since there are certain areas where the visuals look a little awkward. Although there are few of them, and they practically do not affect the overall idea of the game. And the problems with the choice of players on the release of the game were quickly eliminated by the developers.
All in all, Lemnis Gate is a breath of fresh air. The game transforms and transforms the genre, which, it would seem, has been studied by everyone inside and out. This is a great gift for fans of shooters and/or turn-based strategies, especially for those who have a friend who can take with them to participate in 2v2 team fights. The future of Lemnis Gate looks pretty bright, and for sure the developers will not stop there and will actively develop the project.
